Expediency Council member Ali Akbar Velayati said Iran welcomes revival of the old Silk Road in cooperation with China.

Making the remarks in the 11th Silk Road Mayor Forum here on Saturday, he said Iran is positive about the plan to restore the old international route.

He said the revival of the Silk Road will provide China with the opportunity to become a global number one economic power which is welcomed by Iran.

He said Iran is interested in expanding economic and political cooperation with China.

Noting that Iran and China are quite close in their foreign policies, Velayati said the latest views of the Chinese government officials on the Syrian crisis proved the fact.

Expressing that China is Iran’s biggest trade partner, he said the two countries exchanged about 50-million-dollar worth of trade last year.

He said Iran could play the role of a communication route connecting south of Asia with Europe and Africa.
