Greater coordination between Iran and Russia will prevent the US illegitimate interference in Syria, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said here on Tuesday.

Iran-Russia coordination is an absolute necessity in the two countries’ cooperation not to let Syria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty be hurt by the US meddling, Shamkhani said in a telephone conversation with Russia’s Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev.

The two sides’ conversation over the phone was made within the framework of ensuring coordination between Iranian and Russian security bodies to cooperate on the settlement of the Syrian crisis.

The two also held talks on the upcoming meeting on Syria to be held in Astana, the Kazakh capital.

Shamkhani welcomed the continuous negotiations between Tehran and Moscow about the fight against terrorism.

The two sides should make use of the previous experiences in order to improve the process of peace settlement and to protect the ceasefire in Syria, Shamkhani said.

As Shamkhani stressed, it is needed not to let the defeated terrorists misuse the conditions created after the truce.

Referring to the US adventurous measures in the region that may lead to tension, Shamkhani said the US is trying to lift the spirits of the Takfiri terrorists and protect the regions occupied by them. Attacks on the Syrian Army are violation of the UN Security Council’s resolution and the UN Charter, added Shamkhani.

For his part, the Russian official stressed the importance of keeping the Dec 2016 ceasefire in Syria and setting the observer forces to protect it.

Expressing satisfaction over Russia-Iran achievements in the combat against terrorism in Syria, Patrushev said following political mechanisms will have no impact on effectively fighting the terrorist groups.

Iran, Russia and Turkey are the initiators of ceasefire in Syria.
