Iran cautions against violation of conventions on protecting its diplomats

Politics - Diplomatic norms necessitate the countries protecting foreign diplomats, and Iran will remind any country if it violates the international conventions on the issue, government spokesman said here on Tuesday.

Any country in which Iran has a representative office is obliged to protect the Iranian diplomats there, Mohammad Baqer Nobakht said at a weekly press briefing in Tehran.

Asked what the government' reaction will be to the issue of the threat made against the Iranian ambassador to London Hamid Baeedinejad, Nobakht said the states in which Iran has representative offices have to secure the Iranian diplomats and the place where they work.

Attackers, members of a London-based radical cult calling itself 'Shirazi,' stormed the compound of the Iranian Embassy last Friday, hoisting their flag on the balcony of the building without facing any reaction on the part of the London police.

“The group attacking the Iranian Embassy in London represents an extremist Shia community. They have a sectarian interpretation of Shia and insist on insulting the grand Sunni leaders. The UK government, however, has an unwavering commitment to assure the inviolability of the Embassy,” Baeedinejad said after the attack in a Twitter message.

In the wake of the Friday night attack on Iran Embassy in London, Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned British Envoy to Tehran Nicholas Hopton.

Meanwhile, a spokesman in Foreign and Commonwealth Office said that the United Kingdom will take seriously its duties based on Geneva Conventions.
