Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev described the agreements signed during his Iranian counterpart's visit to Baku as historic ones whose results will become evident in the future.

'The memoranda of understanding signed on Caspian Sea energy cooperation and the Rasht-Astara railway were of historic importance,' he said at the joint economic forum of Iran and Azerbaijan in Baku on Thursday.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani arrived in Baku on Wednesday and held talks with senior Azerbaijani officials. He also attended the joint economic forum and signed eight agreements and memoranda of understanding.

Referring to cultural and historical commonalities between the two countries, Aliyev said Iran and Azerbaijan can make use of them for enhancing relations in all fields.

'Today, Iran-Azerbaijan relationship is of great importance to the region and the world,' he said.

'The visit by Iran's President to Azerbaijan was a good opportunity for sharing views on the trade relations between the two countries, and we believe that the level of current relations is not proportionate to the real capacities of both sides,' he said.
