A senior advisor to Iranian foreign minister Hossein Jaberi Ansari on Tuesday dismissed instrumental use of chemical weapons issue as unacceptable, saying that Iran favors a legal approach to deal with the alleged use of such arms.

Talking to IRNA on the sidelines of a meeting with Putin's special envoy on Syrian affairs Alexander Lavrentiev late Tuesday, he added that dealing with allegations about use of chemical weapons should take a legal course.

Today’s meeting focusing on the latest developments in Syria and region took place as per an agreement between the Iranian and Russian presidents in Ankara, he said, noting that they agreed in Ankara that close consultations on Syria between the two countries’ officials be continued.

“Syria is exposed to new threats by the US and other countries which are out to take actions against Syria by raising the issue of chemical weapons,” he said.

Iran’s stance as the biggest victim of the chemical weapons in the contemporary era has always been transparent and clear and it will not agree to use such arms by any side, Ansari said, arguing that given their irreparable damage, Iran is at the forefront of the opposition to chemical weapons in any war.

The senior Iranian diplomat further noted that whenever a major achievement is made in the face of the terrorists, a new coordinated tactic and game is introduced by the terrorist groups and other players.

They are trying to stop developments through such games as the issue of chemical weapons to continue their permanent push for promoting insecurity and instability and protection of terrorists, Ansari said.

Iran will never accept instrumental use of chemical weapons issue which has been turned into a tool in the hands of foreign powers in Syria and region, he said, noting that today’s meeting revealed that the two countries’ stances in this respect are close.

The countries’ support for the terrorists has brought about massive instability in Syria and region, he complained.

Lavrentiev discussed recent developments in Syria with Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani and Jaberi-Ansari in Tehran on Tuesday.
