The presidents of Iran and Afghanistan met on Saturday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Qingdao in east coast of China.

President Hassan Rouhani and President Ashraf Ghani discussed issues of mutual interest, underlining the need to boost political and economic relations between the two countries.

Iran's president is in China to attend the 18th SCO Summit Meeting upon an invitation by his Chinese counterpart.

President Rouhani is accompanied by a high-ranking delegation, including Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Petroleum Minister Bijan Zangeneh, Economy Minister Masoud Karbasian, Vice-President for Economic Affairs Mohammad Nahavandian, and Govervor of the Central Bank of Iran Valiollah Seif.

Founded in 2001, SCO is an organization with eight member states and four observers, including Iran.

The organization aims at taking measures to counter terrorism and extremism and promote economic cooperation.
