Iran's President Hassan Rouhani congratulated France's National Day on Saturday to his French counterpart, expressing hope that the two countries enjoy stronger relations.

In a message to Emanuel Macron, President Rouhani congratulated the day July 14, known as the Bastille Day.

The Iranian president has expressed hope that the common views between the two countries, as well as cooperation and using existing capacities would bring a boost to Iran and France's bilateral, regional and international relations.

He has also expressed hope that the two countries would confront unilateralism, and promote multilateralism.

Bastille Day is the anniversary of storming the Bastille prison on July 14, 1789. The day, a turning point of the French Revolution, is celebrated in France as the country's Nationals Day.

The medieval fortress, armory, and political prison in Paris known as the Bastille was the symbol of France's absolute monarchy's abuses of power.
