UN has to give similar authority to US like other states

Politics - US authority at the United Nations should be similar to other members of the international body, said President Hassan Rouhani of Iran while criticizing US extra authority (veto right) at the UN.

He made the remarks on Sunday while speaking to reporters prior to his departure for New York where he is to address the 73rd UN General Assembly session.

Criticizing the US veto right at the UN Security Council, President Rouhani said, “The US officials are misusing the UN and other members have, so far, failed to use the international body properly.”

He added that US officials are bullying world countries since they wrongfully think one who has power has also the right to decide for others.

“The US officials think they have some [extra] authorities over the UN because they have the right of veto and also because they are the host of the UN,” said the president.

The president residents of the White House have the least respect for the international regulations or treaties, President Rouhani said referring to the performance of the US administration.

US President Donald Trump pulled out his country from the Iran Deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), on May 8, while his move raised the world leaders’ criticisms, particularly those by the Europeans.

“On the one hand, the United States has been adopting a unilateralist ideology while on the other hand, it is following up issues related to the extreme nationalism. These are topics about which other countries, including Iran, have many words to say” at the UN, said the Iranian President.

Elaborating on the US unilateralism, the president said that [President] Trump moved the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem based on a decision he took in December, 2017, while his moves are against Muslims and the Palestinians as well.

As for the JCPOA, President Rouhani said the 2015 nuclear deal, from which Washington withdrew unilaterally, was an international agreement signed by seven countries- the Group 5+1 and Iran- and was confirmed by the US Security Council.

These days, the US has started a new anti-Iran move which is to pressure other countries in order to create obstacles for their ties with Iran, the president said stressing that the US measure is against the human rights.

“The US officials won’t achieve their goals,” said the president.

“The American officials will feel regret over their mistakes and wrong deeds,” the president noted.

As for the agenda of his New York visit, President Rouhani said that the UN General Assembly is an ample opportunity and a public tribune where Iran can discuss its viewpoints about various international and regional questions.

He added that he will hold bilateral meetings with other heads of states on the sidelines of the UNGA to discuss the JCPOA violation by the US and its measures taken to break the international laws.

He added that he is to follow up the issue of the Iran Deal during meetings with a number of European leaders.

President Rouhani went on to say that the regional issues including Yemen and Syria will be among major topics of his talks with heads of the participating states.

He is to return home on September 26 (Wednesday) after addressing the 73rd UNGS session during his four-day stay in New York.

Turning to the Sept 22 Ahvaz terrorist attack took place in Khuzestan Province, southwestern Iran, the president said those who committed such crimes in southwestern Iran are moving in line with the aggressors.

At least 25 people, including women and children, were killed and more than 60 others were injured in Ahvaz when several unknown terrorists opened fire aimlessly to the crowd that was watching a military parade staged on the occasion of the 38th anniversary of an eight-year imposed war against Iran.

A self-proclaimed Saudi-affiliated terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.

US supports all small hireling countries in the region, said President Rouhani adding that Tehran will respond to the crime through legal frameworks and its prudence.
