Iran slams Azerbaijan's detention of citizens over alleged links to Iran

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has rejected any official or unofficial connection between Iranian institutions and government departments and people arrested in the Republic of Azerbaijan, saying arresting Azerbaijani citizens on such false charges is simply unacceptable.

Kanaani on Thursday rejected slammed recent accusations against Iran by security agencies and prosecutors in the Republic of Azerbaijan and said that it has become a habit for the government in Baku to arrest citizens on claims that they have links to Iran.

He said the government of Azerbaijan should avoid attempts that could destroy historical and religious relations between the country and Iran.

Kanaani reiterated that is a natural right for all governments to deal with their law-breaking citizens, saying, however, that arresting and imprisoning citizens on charges of connection to Iran is unacceptable.
