Iran urges OPEC members to unify against divisive attempts

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has stressed the need for OPEC member states to exercise unity in the face of divisive attempts of Western countries which seek their own interests when it comes to dealing with international trade issues.

Speaking in a meeting in Tehran on Saturday with OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais, Raisi referred to constructive interaction between members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries as a factor that contributes to the success of the Organization.

“The Islamic Republic has always had constructive cooperation with this Organization and we are determined to enhance the level of the cooperation,” the president said.

He noted that the main objective of forming OPEC was to support the rights of oil producers and to prevent discrimination against them.

“I hope that in its new term of activity, OPEC will be able to rein in fluctuations and calm the oil market," said Raisi.

The OPEC secretary general, for his part, hailed Iran’s role as a founding member of OPEC which has always had an effective and useful cooperation with the organization and its member states.

Both at the ministerial level and at the technical level, Iran has always acted in the direction of strengthening the cohesion and unity of OPEC members, Ghais said.

He expressed hope that with unanimity among the member countries and the help and cooperation of the Islamic Republic, the Organization will be able to restore calm of international oil markets.
