Iran, South Africa FMs discuss bilateral ties

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and his South African counterpart Naledi Pandor in a meeting here on Thursday discussed bilateral relations.

Amirabdollahian met and held talks with Pandor on the sidelines of BRICS meeting in the South African port city of Cape Town on Thursday evening.

The Iranian foreign minister thanked Pandora for inviting him to attend BRICS meeting.

Amirabdollahian expressed hope that the mechanisms for membership of Iran and other interested countries would be calrified by the BRICS members soon. 

Earlier on Thursdsy, Amirabdollahian arrived in the South African port city of Cape Town to attend a meeting of the BRICS group of emerging economies.

Upon arrival at the airport in southwest of South Africa on Thursday, the Iranian foreign minister was welcomed by the officials of the host country.

Amirabdollahian is visiting Cape Town at the invitation of his South African counterpart Naledi Pandor to participate in a ministerial meeting of the BRICS which is planned to kick off on June 2.

During his visit to the South Africa, the Iranian foreign minister is scheduled to hold talks with counterparts from countries participating in the meeting to discuss issues of mutual interests.

BRICS is an acronym for regional economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy Mehdi Safari said earlier this week that Iran has been among the first in a group of 19 countries that have applied for membership in BRICS.
