Iranian President Hassan Rouhani donated a total of 2.7 billion rials (about $67,000) to help release prisoners jailed for committing unintentional offenses.

The donation was made on Tuesday concurrent with a ceremony held on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan in Tehran, the official website of the president said Wednesday.

During the ceremony, Iranians rushed to help release poor prisoners by raising funds and providing them with the money they ought to pay to be freed.

It is expected that 7,500 prisoners will be freed from jails following generous donations made by the country’s officials and people.

Earlier, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei had allocated a total of 3.13 billion rials (about $100,000) to help release the prisoners.
