The new Iranian school year began throughout the country Sunday morning when President Hassan Rouhani symbolically rang the bell of a school in Tehran prior to his departure to New York.

The Iranian school year begins on the first day of the seventh month of the Iranian calendar year, “Mehr”.

During his speech to the opening ceremony of the new educational year, President Rouhani said the first of Mehr is highly important as it is when 'we start working and learning life skills.

'It is at schools that we learn how to be faithful, communicate with others and achieve scientific successes,' he said.

The president also wished for a good and happy [school] year for the Iranian students.

He later left the Iranian capital for New York to attend the 73rd UN General Assembly, which officially opened on September 18.

The President is to address the USGA 73rd session.
