Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi on Friday expressed sympathy with the Indian government and nation as well as families of the victims over a train incident which killed scores of people and wounded dozens.

At least fifty people have been killed and 60 injured after being run over by a train in northern India while watching an effigy burn, reports say.

The effigy was being burned near railway tracks in Amritsar, Punjab, in honor of the major Hindu festival of Dussehra, which is celebrated every autumn.

It is thought 700 people were present at the celebration and an eyewitness said that the crowd could not hear the train coming.
