FM Zarif says US turning region into powder keg

The United States by selling weapons to our region much more than what the region needs, has turned it into a “powder keg,” Iranian foreign minister said on Saturday.

'This is a dangerous policy they follow in our region,' Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters on the sidelines of the 2nd Speakers’ Conference with participation of Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, Pakistan, China and Russia in Tehran.

“The amount of weapons the US sells to our region is unbelievable and beyond the need of the region,” Zarif said.

He added that the US policy has brought many modern destructive weapons to the region, which have given no help to establishment of regional peace and security.

Asked about US accusations against Iran regarding missiles, the foreign minister said that the American officials spare no effort to interrupt relations between Iran and Europe, so they resort to baseless allegations these days.

“They [American officials] try to distort the regional issues.'

“We’ve read in the American media that the US arms are in hands of Al Qaeda in Yemen and Daesh (ISIS) in Syria, and this is a danger threatening our region,” Zarif said.

That the US has been isolated in the world, entered [trade] war with China and even arrested a senior Huawei executive indicate US frustration rather than its power, the top diplomat noted.

About today's Tehran conference, Zarif said that speakers of the six countries can organize a public movement against terrorism.

The 2nd Speakers’ Conference in Tehran focuses on the Challenges of Terrorism and Inter-Regional Connectivity.
