Iran’s eight-month minerals exports near $7b

Iran exported 39.882 million tons of minerals worth $6.874 billion during March 21-November 21, which shows a seven-percent growth in terms of value and a 10-percent decline in terms of weight.

According to an Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) report, during the eight-month period, the country imported 2.573 million tons of mine and mineral products worth $2.291 billion which indicates 36-percent and 27-percent decline in terms of weight and value respectively, imidro.gov.ir reported.

Based on the report, Iran exported steel products valued at $3.298 billion in the said period while copper minerals fetched $514 million, cement brought in $391 million and exports of iron ore concentrates reached $335 million in the eight months to November 21.

Iran also exported zinc valued at $187 million as well as lead worth $92 million while sponge iron exports brought in $88 million in the period, the report added.

Coals and coke worth $61 million, chromium minerals worth $39 million, molybdenum minerals worth $23 million and alumina powder worth $220,000 were among other minerals exported from Iran.

Iran has over 100,000 mines of which 60,000 are operating and the rest are either inactive or being equipped.

Iran’s mines produce 400 million tons of minerals annually, of which 60 percent are construction materials.

During March 2017-January 2018, Iran exported more than 53.3 million tons of minerals and mining industries products valued at $7.5 billion.
