Tehran-Baku ties always growing: Iran president

Relations between Iran and Azerbaijan Republic has been improving in the past few years, said Iran's President Hassan Rouhani in a meeting with the visiting speaker of Azerbaijan's parliament in Tehran on Tuesday.

'Fortunately, the relations between the two countries in the recent years have been promoting and today, we are witnessing close cooperation and relations between Tehran and Baku,' said President Rouhani during the meeting with Ogtay Asadov. 

Relations between Iran and Azerbaijan have been 'friendly and brotherly,' he stressed.

Saying that the presidents of the two countries have met 12 times in the past five years, he said, “The outcome of all the attempts and close relations between authorities of the two countries has been development of relations and cooperation of the two nations.”

“Due to its cultural and religious similarities with Iran, Azerbaijan Republic is one of the closest countries to Iran and we have had good relations with the country since its independence,” said President Rouhani.

He also stressed developing cooperation in different fields such as industry, pharmaceuticals, science and technology.

“Iran and Azerbaijan took an important decision for using energy resources in the Caspian Sea, which is a win-win agreement,' he said.

Referring to the cooperation between the two countries in construction of North-South Corridor, Rouhani added that the implementation of the project will connect the Sea of Oman and the Indian Ocean to the Azerbaijan Republic, Russia, the Black Sea, and Eastern and Northern Europe.

“The Caspian Sea legal regime is very important to all littoral states and good steps have been taken so far in this regard,' the Iranian president said.

Saying that regional issues and disagreements must be resolved through negotiations and political solutions, Rouhani added, “In this regard, Iran is ready to help settle regional disputes.”

During the meeting, Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan Republic Asadov said, “The Presidents of the two countries are determined to further cement relations and cooperation.”

“Trade between the two countries has increased by 40% in 2018, which can grow further based on the capabilities and potentials in the two countries,” Asadov added.

He also praised Iran’s approach towards regional and international issues and its defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its neighbors and added that the regional issues and disagreements can only be resolved by the states of the region.
