24-rank rise of Iran in power generation over past 40 years: Minister of Energy

Minister of Energy Reza Ardakanian says the country’s rank has been promoted to the 14th place in terms of power generation from 38th place in the last 40 years and now, Iran has an exchange capacity with all its neighbors.

The official said on Saturday at a news conference on performance of his ministry over the past 40 years, 'These days, we will host the Iraqi Minister of Energy to finalize a three-year plan to reform the country's electricity system and the cooperation includes powerplant construction and reconstruction and a reduction in wasting its electricity grid.

'Our installed capacity of 7,000 megawatts in the first years of revolution has now reached 80,000 megawatts, which has increased by 11.4 times; in these years, peak consumption has also changed from 3,480 megawatts In 1978 to reach 57,090 megawatts. 

The member of the government said the peak in power consumption in the country increased by 16.4 percent, which was in the industrial, agricultural, domestic sectors.

'In 1978, the rural population of the country was 19 million, with 4,367 villages and a significant portion of them have been deprived of electricity, which now reaches 21 million people and 50,097 villages have electricity. 

He added that in the clean energy sector, 1,000 megawatts of the Bushehr power plant has been put in the orbit, and the rise in the capacity of nuclear powerplants is part of the country's policies; renewable power has also increased in these years and 'we plan to reach to 5,000 megawatts until the end of the Sixth Development Plan.
