Rouhani to meet Putin, Erdogan in Sochi to discuss Syria

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is due to travel to Russia this Thursday in a bid to hold talks with his Russian and Turkish counterparts on Syria.

'Rouhani will travel to the Russian city of Sochi [on the Black Sea coast] at the formal invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the trilateral summit of presidents of Russia, Iran and Turkey,” according to a statement published by the Iranian government on Tuesday.

The three presidents are supposed to discuss joint fight against terrorism in the region, restoring calm to Syria, estabalizing the country and returning the displaced Syrians, according to a government official.

It will be the fourth such summit between Putin, Rouhani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who are expected to review results of the Astana talks in which Syrian opposition and government representatives participated in the Kazakh capital.

The three heads of state will also discuss Syria’s territorial integrity, internal political processes, popular rule as well as their cooperation in rebuilding the Arab country following eight years of a devastating war.

The summit, set for this Thursday Feb 14, comes after three rounds of talks between the presidents, the last of which was held in September in Tehran.
