Iran Congratulates Nigeria, Senegal on Successful Elections

Iran’s Foreign Ministry congratulated Senegal and Nigeria on holding presidential elections successfully.

In a statement on Friday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi wished success for Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria and Macky Sall of Senegal who were reelected as the presidents of their respective countries after securing the majority of the votes.

He also expressed hope that Tehran’s ties with Abuja and Dakar would further grow in light of the results of the recent elections in the two West African states.

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari was declared the clear winner by nearly 4 million votes in the early hours of Wednesday. The 76-year-old incumbent of the ruling All Progressives Congress party, secured 56 percent, or 15.2 million votes, in the February 23 polls.

In Senegal, President Macky Sall also won reelection without the need for a second round of voting, giving him five more years in office. Sall received 58.27 percent of the vote. The 57-year-old president sought reelection on his record of building roads and creating jobs, while opposition supporters maintained those efforts had not reached many in this West African country where young men often risk their lives to migrate to Europe.
