IPU golden chance for global cooperation: Iranian speaker

Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting is a great opportunity for multilateral as well as bilateral cooperation on global arena, Iran's Parliament speaker said Saturday.

'The meeting, attended at least by 200 heads or members of parliaments, looks like the United Nations General Assembly that the heads of states attend,' Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani told reporters before departing Tehran for Qatar to attend the meeting.

Referring to the host country of the biannual meetings, he said that Iran had supported for holding the inter-parliamentary meeting in Doha.

At the meeting, various important issues, including terrorism, illegal drugs smuggling, human rights, development of the countries and the role their parliaments play will be discussed, the speaker said.

On the recent flooding in Iran, Larijani said that the US did not allow the Red Cross aids reach Iran's Red Crescent.

'A move that proves the US hostility towards the Iranian people,' he said.

Given the enmity and the economic sanctions against Iran, Larijani said, 'Iran's presence at the meeting to consult with all countries' parliament speakers is of great importance.

He said that important talks with his counterparts across the globe are scheduled on the sidelines of the meeting.

The 140th IPU is taking place in Qatar with the Iranian parliamentary delegate arriving in Doha on Thursday (April 4).
