Minister: Iran starting manufacturing phase of COVID-19 vaccine

Minister of Health and Medical Education Saeed Namaki announced on Tuesday that Iran has taken effective steps towards manufacturing coronavirus vaccine.

Iran will start a human trial of the vaccine soon, Namaki said when addressing the opening ceremony of the international pharmaceutical exhibition Pharmex June 30- July 2.

Pharmex had been postponed for four months due to the outbreak of the coronavirus which has killed near 503,000 across the world since Dec 2019.

At the ceremony, the minister described efforts of the Iranian scholars to this issue as promising.

Animal test of the COVID-19 has been successful and the human trial will start soon, he added.

The minister highlighted efforts of the Iranian scholars and knowledge-based companies, saying that Iran today is one of the powerful regional countries that can produce raw material for the pharmaceutical industry.

He went on to say that Iran is among the big exporters of raw chemical materials for chemical medicines.

In the coronavirus conditions created in the country in late February, Iran could meet the country's needs to equipment to fight the virus within two months, he said, adding that the country is now turned into an exporter of that equipment for countering the COVID-19.

The deadly coronavirus radiating from Wuhan, China, in December 2019 has affected nearly 10, 879,000  people across the world and killed over 502,000, while the number of the dead in Iran is about 10,900.

Despite the sanctions against Iran, the country has now no problem providing the people with due medicines, the minister said.

He added that 98 percent of medical needs are being met indigenously as 200 pharmaceutical companies are active in this area.

Iranian officials have already announced that the country has exported cargoes of serology test kits to Germany and Turkey.

Iranian export of anti-coronavirus products which started being made just a few days after its outbreak in Iran in late February is on the rise due to requests from different countries, according to officials' remarks.
