US must lift sanctions in practical, verifiable manner: Iran nuclear chief

Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Mohammad Eslami said on Monday that it is time for the US to reform its wrong policies and lift all sanctions in a practical, effective and verifiable manner.

Eslami made the remarks at the 65th Annual Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna on Monday.

He criticized the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), saying that the US exit breached UN Resolution 2231.

Eslami noted that the US sanctions within the framework of the Maximum Pressure Campaign have failed, adding that the US has no choice but to abandon its addiction to imposing unilateral sanctions and respect international rules.

The Iranian parliament approved a piece of legislation on December 2, 2020, in the wake of the lack of action of the three European countries that are parties to the JCPOA in the face of the US continued sanctions against Iran, the AEOI head highlighted.

Eslami reiterated that the Parliament legislation obliged the AEOI to cease the implementation of the IAEA monitoring beyond the comprehensive safeguards agreement.

The US must now lift the sanctions on Iran in an effective and verifiable manner, he underscored.

The AEOI head stated that as president Raisi has stated Iran wants result-orientated negotiations in a bid to lift the oppressive pressures and sanctions against Iranians.

He called for the IAEA to remain independent and impartial and not to make politically motivated decisions.
