Venezuela, Iran oil ministers discuss energy ties

Oil ministers of Venezuela and Iran have held a phone call to review bilateral collaborations as well as the latest developments in the international energy market.

During a phone conversation on Thursday, Iranian Minister of Petroleum Javad Owji and his Venezuelan counterpart Tareck El Aissami called for expansion of cooperation in the energy sector.

The administration of President Ebrahim Raisi has attached importance to expansion of collaborations with Venezuela since the inauguration of the administration on August 3, 2021.

The Iranian Ministry of Petroleum considers the Latin American country one of the most important hubs of energy diplomacy, so the two sides are pursuing broaden cooperation in this regard.

In a May visit to Caracas, Owji and his delegation signed different contracts with the Venezuelan side to develop oil and gas fields, upgrade refineries, train workforces, and provide technical and engineering services as well as improve export markets for petroleum, gas condensates and oil products.

The Iranian oil minister also declared in October that the first overseas refinery built by Iran is called El Palito Refinery, which has been set up in Venezuela.

According to the minister, the El Palito Refinery is capable of refining about 100k barrels per day of crude oil from oil fields in the Latin American country.
