Envoy renews Iran’s support for Azerbaijan sovereignty over Nagorno-Karabakh

The Iranian Ambassador to the Republic of Azerbaijan has underlined that the Islamic Republic of Iran considers Nagorno-Karabakh as a territory of Azerbaijan and supports the restoration of Baku's sovereignty over the region.

Abbas Mousavi wrote on his social media account in Azeri language that Iran’s principled position has always emphasized Azerbaijan’s sovereignty over Nagorno-Karabakh; so, Tehran welcomes the preservation of territorial integrity, as well as the restoration of Azerbaijan's sovereignty over the region.

Preserving the security and rights of the Armenian residents in the Nagorno-Karabakh region can be merely meaningful when the sovereignty and laws of the Republic of Azerbaijan are respected, the ambassador noted.

Armenia and Azerbaijan engaged in two wars in the past three decades over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Azerbaijan launched a 24-hour assault on the region on September 19, 2023 and Baku said it succeeded in retaking full control of the region the same day; then, ethnic Armenian forces agreed to a Russia-brokered ceasefire that saw them disband their armed forces.
