An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale rocked Sarpol-e Zahab Town, Kermanshah Province, on Saturday.

According to a report of seismography center affiliated to Tehran University Geophysics Institute, the tremor occurred at 18:55 hours local time (15:25 hours GMT) and in the depth of 8 km underground.

The epicenter of the quake was registered at 7 km of Sarpol-e Zahab, 20 km of Qasr-e Shirin and 37 km Gilan-e Gharb.

There was no initial report on injuries or damage caused to infrastructure.

Since the November 12's earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale which claimed 620 lives and wounded 12,386 individuals in Kermanshah Province, to December 26 over 1,600 aftershocks have been registered in this region.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, as it straddles several major fault lines that cover at least 90% of the country. Some of the tremors which hit different parts of Iran have been destructive, causing huge number of damage to life and property.
