Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi denounced brutal attack on Iran’s consulate general in Basra and called for punishment of the perpetrators of the incident.

Recalling the great responsibility of the Iraq government for protecting diplomatic sites, he warned about hidden elements seeking to mar the two nations’ relations.

Asked about the unknown attackers' offensive against the consulate general, he confirmed the news, saying that unfortunately the incident has caused heavy damage to property.

“Of course, because of the pre-cautionary measures taken before in earlier threats, fortunately, no staffer in the mission has been harmed,” Qasemi said.

He urged the Iraqi government to identify those behind the incident at the earliest and punish them.

The Iraqi government will be responsible for any neglect in this respect, as it is expected it to pinpoint the agents and punish them severely.
