Iran's Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has reiterated the Islamic Republic’s unwavering support for the Syrian government and nation.

“Nothing can obstruct the continuation of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s all-out support for the Syrian nation and government under the current circumstances,” Larijani said during a Tuesday meeting with Grand Mufti of Syria Sheikh Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun.

Pointing to the ongoing crisis in the Arab country, Larijani added that instability in Syria would serve the interests of Israel.

“The Zionist regime (Israel) will benefit the most from undermining Syria in the current situation in the region.”

Hassoun, for his part, said Syria is being targeted because of its support for the oppressed people of Palestine against the aggression of the occupying regime of Israel.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

Speaking to the media also on Monday, Larijani said political dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition is the only way out of the crisis in the Arab country.

“Political talks should replace the current attitudes in Syria since it is the solution to the crisis in the country,” Larijani said.

He reiterated the Islamic Republic’s support for reforms and democracy in Syria, rejecting any foreign interfering in the affairs of the crisis-hit country.

The Iranian speaker added that democracy cannot be achieved by sending weapons into Syria.
