The Syrian army continued its military operations in the Southern Reef (outskirts of) Damascus on Monday and announced that it is now in control of 70% of Marj al-Sultan region.

The army took control of more than 70 percent of Marj al-Sultan region in Reef Damascus on Monday, FNA reporter in Damascus said. "The army’s mop-up operations in different parts of Reef Damascus are still underway," he added.

The army units targeted and destroyed the concentration centers of armed rebels affiliated to the Free Syrian Army (FSA) which were used for launching mortar attacks on the army and the civilians in Marj al-Sultan region.

The Syrian army also blocked the escape path of two groups of armed rebels in Marj al-Sultan region, killing and arresting a majority of the rebels.

Marj al-Sultan is a strategic region of Reef Damascus which was used by armed rebels as a main launch pad to conduct attacks and operations.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against the Syrian police, border guards, statesmen, army and the civilians being reported across the country.

Thousands of people have been killed since terrorist and armed groups turned protest rallies into armed clashes.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.
