Iran's Deputy Chairman of the Assembly of Experts Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi says the Iranian nation will not back down from its positions because of the US-led sanctions against the country.

“The Iranian nation has faced different sanctions by domineering states since the victory of the [1979] Islamic Revolution,” he said on Wednesday, pointing out that the nation has succeeded in overcoming bigger problems such as war.

“The Iranian nation will not back down from its revolutionary and Islamic positions in supporting the Islamic republic due to enemy sanctions imposed against the country,” the cleric added.

Ayatollah Yazdi described the sanctions as opportunities for the Islamic establishment and said while such measures could affect production and distribution in the country, Iranian official should find solutions to such problems.

On July 1, the European Union sanctions, adopted under US pressure, against Iran's oil and financial sectors came into effect.

The sanctions prevent all EU member states from purchasing Iran's oil or extending insurance coverage for tankers carrying Iranian crude.

The sanctions have been imposed against Iran based on the allegation that the country is seeking to acquire a military nuclear capability.

Tehran refutes such allegations, saying frequent inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency have never found any diversion in Iran's nuclear energy program.
