“The demands of the Muslim people of Saudi Arabia for justice and freedom herald a bright future for the people and the country,” read a Sunday statement by a faction of Iran's Majlis Principlist legislators.
“A nation that for about a century has been under the yoke of a ruling system influenced by the Western hegemonic powers such as Britain and the US seeks to experience a free environment and participation in its own fate,” the statement added.
The Iranian legislators expressed “all-out support” for the democratic uprising of the people of Saudi Arabia and called on the international organizations to distance themselves from the West’s “double standards” and lend support to the movement of the Persian Gulf nation.
Since February 2011, protesters have held demonstrations on an almost regular basis in Saudi Arabia, mainly in the Qatif region and the town of Awamiyah in Eastern Province, calling for the release of all political prisoners, freedom of expression and assembly, and an end to widespread discrimination.
However, the demonstrations have turned into protests against the Al Saud regime, especially since November 2011, when Saudi security forces killed five protesters and injured many others in Eastern Province.
