Head of Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi told ISNA on Sunday that all ambiguities were resolved at the expert-level meeting in Istanbul with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5+1) on July 3, 2012.
“It was agreed that [Deputy Secretary of Iran’s] Supreme National Security Council Ali] Baqeri and [Deputy to EU Foreign Policy Chief Helga] Schmid hold a follow-up technical meeting before [Iran's nuclear negotiator Saeed] Jalili and [EU foreign policy chief Catherine] Ashton meet again,” Boroujerdi added.
He added that the disregard for Iran's package of proposals showed there is no political resolve to solve the outstanding problems despite ongoing negotiations.
“If the agreements reached at the Istanbul meeting form the basis of the [next round of] talks, the P5+1 will have no option but to support Iran's position [as] they (the P5+1) have nothing new to say,” said the lawmaker.
Boroujerdi went on to add that it is only logical for the P5+1 to move in a direction to end US pressure.
He stated that the Iranian package of proposals was reviewed in detail at the Istanbul meeting, and the experts present could find no fault with Iran’s viewpoints from any legal or technical angle as it was in line with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regulations and within the framework of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
“What Iran put forth [at the Istanbul meeting] was completely based on logic and it was [in fact] the Islamic Republic’s right to peaceful nuclear activities under Article VI of the NPT and naturally the Islamic Republic expects all countries to recognize and respect this right,” he stressed.
Iran and the P5+1 agreed to hold the expert-level talks in Istanbul during their negotiations in the Russian capital, Moscow, in June.
