Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman says the Islamic Republic and its northern neighbor, the Republic of Azerbaijan, are resolute to expand all-out bilateral relations.

Speaking at a weekly press conference in Tehran on Tuesday, Ramin Mehmanparast said relations between Tehran and Baku are on a very good level and the two countries share numerous similarities.

“If certain elements do not want to see good relations between the two neighbors, Azerbaijani authorities should exercise more vigilance and do not allow any move to damage close ties between the two countries,” Mehmanparast pointed out.

He further stressed that Iranian and Azerbaijani officials have reached agreements to thwart any attempt aimed at souring bilateral ties, expressing optimism that Tehran-Baku relations will further improve in the near future.

On July 14, Head of the social political department at the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Ali Hasanov said that the strained relations between Baku and Tehran are improving.

Hasanov told reporters in the western Azeri city of Ganja that tension between Iran and Azerbaijan is being resolved due to the will of the Azeri and Iranian authorities.

“As it is known, circles close to the West, including some anti-Azerbaijani and anti-Iranian circles, played an important role in exacerbating the recent tensions,” he noted.

The senior Azerbaijani official added that strained relations between Iran and Azerbaijan are only in the “interests of some official and unofficial geopolitical circles.”

During a meeting with Azeri President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on July 12, Iran's Minister of Education Hamid-Reza Haji-Babaei extended President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s invitation to the Aliyev to participate in the forthcoming summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran.

Earlier in the day, the Iranian minister held talks with Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mamedyarov and stressed the importance of bolstering relations with Baku in all fields.
