Iran's Air Force plans to hold a massive military maneuver in the southern parts of the country by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 2013), a top Iranian commander says.

“Maneuvers carried out by the Islamic Republic of Iran are peaceful and indicate that Iran and regional countries are capable of safeguarding their security,” Deputy Commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh told reporters on Sunday.

He added that the presence of extra-regional powers in the Persian Gulf is “illegitimate” and emphasized that there is no necessity for such a presence.

Nasirzadeh reiterated that the extra-regional powers cannot provide regional states with security and added that the countries in the region have the capability to ensure their security if they cooperate with each other.

In late August, Iran's Air Defense Force announced the construction of the Islamic Republic’s largest air defense base in the southern Iranian city of Abadeh.

Earlier in July, the air defense units conducted a three-day drill with the successful downing of the mock enemy’s unmanned stealth aircraft by the army’s artillery units.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in the defense sector and gained self-sufficiency in essential military hardware and defense systems.
