Former Iranian Majlis speaker Ali Akbar Nategh Nouri has met with the chairman of Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, asking him to run for presidency for the country’s 11th presidential election, the reformist Arman newspaper reported.

According to the paper, Nategh Nouri told Rafsanjani that he has been in contact with different people, including revolutionary forces, members of Grand Bazar and senior clergies, who all voiced their concerns over recent steps taken against the former Iranian president.

Rafsanjani, reportedly stressed at the meeting that he would run for election “without any fear.”

The report, however, was in contrast to earlier remarks by Rafsanjani’s brother and son, who declared that the veteran Iranian politician would not run for presidency for the upcoming election.
