As divisions emerged at the Syrian opposition conference in Doha, a senior Iranian foreign ministry official on Monday stressed Tehran's opposition to any gathering which may result in continued violence in Syria.

"Any meeting which may fuel continued violence in Syria is a betrayal to the wise people of Syria and the axis of resistance," Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian told FNA commenting on the Doha meeting.

Abdollahian, however, expressed the hope that the meeting could send out a positive message for encouraging national dialogue in Syria.

He further underlined Iran's emphasis on a full ceasefire in Syria to be followed by national dialogue among the representatives of all the people and government as "major steps towards calm and tranquility for the Syrian people and peace and stability for the region".

On Sunday, Syrian opposition groups held their first day of talks in the Qatari capital, Doha.

The meeting pushed by the US was meant to reshape the Syrian National Council, the main opposition, into a possible government in exile, but differences are already apparent. Sharp disagreements arose Sunday on the first day of the Syrian opposition conference.

The US and the West have long urged the SNC, widely seen as dysfunctional and out of touch, to broaden its base and include a greater spectrum of Syrian society, especially the armed gangs, rebels and terrorists inside the country.

Analysts believe that the failure to reach a deal in Doha could further heighten tensions between Syria's political opposition and the West.
