The Iranian Foreign Ministry says Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s plan for resolving the crisis in Syria shares many common points with Tehran’s six-point proposal for the Arab country.

“Assad’s remarks show that the Syrian government is trying to eradicate instability and insecurity and implement political reforms with the support of the people,” Ramin Mehmanparast said on Monday.

In a key speech on Sunday, Assad called for an end to the terrorist operations inside Syria and urged "concerned states and parties" to stop funding, arming and harboring militants.

Assad added that his government is always ready to hold talks with the opposition and political parties and would call for a “comprehensive national dialog” after foreign parties end their support for the militants and the terrorist activities end in the country.

Reiterating Iran’s support for Assad’s plan, Mehmanparast said, “The political situation of the region reveals the political objectives that Western countries and the supporters of the Zionist regime (Israel) are after in Syria.”

“By supporting Bashar al-Assad’s plan, all regional countries must prevent new acts of sedition because instability in the region is detrimental to all countries,” the Iranian official added.

“If the US and some Western countries claim to be supporting the rights of the Syrian people and advocating democracy, they had better provide the grounds on which the country’s people can decide on their future in elections,” Mehmanparast said.

The Iranian official said all influential countries in the region should pave the way for the implementation of Assad’s plan through negotiation and political consultations.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.
