Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says the Islamic Republic will pursue its national interests in line with commitment to international conventions and treaties.

“Commitment to international conventions and treaties is among Iran’s absolute principles in the field of foreign policy, and the advancement of interests and the maintenance of national sovereignty are carried out [by Iran] in line with these treaties,” Salehi said in an address to a national meeting on the legal regime of the Caspian Sea on Thursday.

He added that Iran is among the few countries in the world that have numerous neighbors and noted that Tehran seeks to achieve convergence with its neighboring states and remove possible differences with them.

The minister pointed to the bullying countries’ pressure on Iran and expressed confidence that the Islamic Republic will manage to withstand international pressure in the near future.

“If we are supposed to have sustainable political independence, we should pay the price for it,” Salehi pointed out.

The US and some of its allies have imposed sanctions based on the false claim that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran rejects the allegations, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
