Tehran City Council reelected Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf as the mayor of the Iranian capital for the third consecutive term.

Qalibaf was elected as Tehran’s mayor for the first time in September 2005 and served two consecutive terms in office.

Qalibaf‎ is the 54th and current mayor of Tehran. He has been judged as the world’s eighth best mayor from a shortlist of 50 top city leaders in 2008.

He was born in Torqabeh, Khorassan Razavi province on August 23, 1961.

At the age of nineteen, Qalibaf was one of the military commanders of the Iran-Iraq war (1980-88).

In 1998, he was named Commander of Air Force of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC). In 2001, he received his PhD in geopolitics from Tarbiat Modarres University. He is currently a faculty member of Tehran University where he teaches geography.

Qalibaf has completed Airbus pilot training courses in France.
