Iran and Morocco are due to resume their diplomatic relations and reopen embassies in the near future, a senior Iranian diplomat announced.

The Islamic Republic of Iran and Morocco are to resume diplomatic relations, Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said on Wednesday.

He added that during the recent talks between Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Moroccan counterpart Salaheddine Mezouar, the two sides underlined the need to reestablish diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Iran and Morocco plan to reopen their embassies in the near future, Amir Abdollahian said.

Morocco recalled its charge d'affaires from Iran in March 2009 over remarks by an Iranian politician which the kingdom said questioned Bahrain's sovereignty. The Iranian ambassador also left the kingdom after Morocco's decision to cut diplomatic relations with Iran.

After Morocco's King Mohammed VI dispatched his foreign minister to Bahrain with a message of support for its ruler King Hamad bin Issa Al-Khalifa, Iran protested by summoning Rabat's envoy to Tehran.

Morocco moved to end diplomatic relations after Rabat recalled its charge d'affaires to Tehran for consultations over what it termed "inopportune expressions."

But Iran and Bahrain soon restored neighborly relations after former Iranian Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli headed to Bahrain to diffuse the misunderstanding.

Four days later Bahraini Foreign Minister Khalid Bin Ahmed Bin Mohamed Al-Khalifa traveled to Tehran and described his visit as 'a response to all those parties which want to see distorted relations between the two countries
