An Iranian lawmaker says hosting the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit will expand Iran's economic relations at international level.

“Hosting the Non-Aligned Movement summit and the presence of a large number of the world’s high-level delegations in Tehran will result in the expansion of Iran's economic relations at the international level and increase export of Iranian products,” Seyyed Mousa Mousavi said on Monday.

“By holding the Non-Aligned Movement summit in our country, the Islamic Iran is once again in the limelight of the world media and public opinion and Tehran’s stances are presented from a more powerful position at international level with firm popular and political support,” he added.

Member of the Majlis (parliament) Energy Committee stated that high-level officials and heads of states should distance themselves from the pressures imposed by the west and in line with Iran, pursue the goals of the world’s independent nations.

The Iranian lawmaker also said that holding the Non-Aligned Movement summit can help Iran deal with the illegal and unilateral sanctions imposed by the US and the European Union against the Iranian nation.

More than 100 countries are partaking in the NAM meeting which kicked off at expert level in Tehran on Sunday.

At the opening ceremony of the NAM expert-level meeting, Iran assumed the rotating presidency of the movement for three years. Egypt's Ambassador to the United Nations Mootaz Khalil formally handed over the presidency to Iran.
