Senior Iranian lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi says the Islamic Republic and Russia share the same views with regards to the situation in Syria.

“Close cooperation between Iran and Russia in resolving regional problems and crises, including in Syria, plays an important role in preventing the spread of the crisis and finding a diplomatic solution,” head of Iran Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said in a meeting with the Russian Ambassador to Tehran Levan Dzhagaryan on Wednesday.

He went on to say that, despite increased cooperation between Iran and Russia, the two countries have numerous capacities to expand relations especially in trade and economic areas.

The Iranian lawmaker stressed that strengthening cooperation between Tehran and Moscow can play a key role in establishing peace and sustainable stability in the region.

Boroujerdi described exchanging parliamentary delegations between the two countries as important, adding that consultations between the two countries’ parliaments can play an important role in facilitating mutual exchanges between the two sides.

Dzhagaryan, for his part, said relations with Iran are important to Russia and Moscow supports expansion of economic, political and parliamentary ties with Tehran.

Referring to the situation in Syria, the Russian official underlined the necessity of finding a Syria-Syria solution via political negotiations and ending financial and arms support for terrorist groups in the Arab country.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus says ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists’ are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.
