Azerbaijan has dismissed as “absurd and unfounded” a Sunday Times report claiming that Israel is about to deploy drones on its soil for possible strike on Iran.

“Azerbaijan's position has been voiced several times. Baku will never allow its territory be used against neighbors,” Azeri Foreign Ministry spokesman, Elman Abdullayev, was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

“Azerbaijan maintains good neighborly relations [with Iran] and will never take such a step. This is our position,” he noted.

In its latest edition, the London-based Sunday Times speculated that the Zionist regime plans to use “giant, long-range Heron drones to launch stealthy pre-emptive strikes from Azerbaijan” on Iran’s ballistic missile sites.

In November, an official at Azerbaijan’s presidential office rejected similar media reports that Baku and Tel Aviv have drawn a joint plan aimed at facilitating an Israeli attack on Iran.

Media reports had revived speculations about Azerbaijan facilitating an Israeli attack against Iran after leaked intelligence from two 'former Azeri military officers with links to serving personnel' said late September that Azerbaijan and Israel have been looking at how Azeri bases and intelligence could serve in a possible strike on Iran.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program with Tel Aviv using this pretext to threaten Iran with a military option.

Iran rejects the allegation, arguing that as a member of International Atomic Energy Agency and a signatory to Non-Proliferation Treaty, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
