Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said Iran and Oman plan to expand their naval cooperation and stage more joint naval wargames.

Sayyari, heading a high-ranking Iranian military delegation, is in Oman at the invitation of his Omani counterpart in a bid to further consolidate friendly relations between the two countries.

Speaking at a meeting with his Omani counterpart, Sayyari described Oman as Iran's friend and brother which pursues common and similar with Tehran.

He said that the two countries together with other friendly and brotherly countries in the region can establish security in the important region which includes the sensitive and strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Sayyari stated that Iran and Oman plan to hold massive joint naval exercises in the near future, and added, "The Islamic Republic of Iran's Navy is ready to host Omani warships in (Iran's Southern port city of) Bandar Abbas and we hope that the two countries' naval flotillas continue exchanging visits in the future."

The Omani commander, for his part, said Muscat is eager to develop military ties with Iran in naval fields and hold more joint naval drills.

In January 2013, Iranian and Omani naval units staged a series of joint maneuvers in Iran's Southern waters to practice their skills and capabilities in rescue and relief operations.

The Iranian Navy's surface and air units as well as several units of Oman's Royal Navy Force took part in the Iran-Oman joint relief and rescue drills in the Southern waters of Iran's Hormuz Island.

Speaking about the drills, First Captain Ramin Taqipour said at the time that naval units carried out their rescue and relief missions within a 45-minute span, and said that "the record matches international standards and planned objectives".

Taqipour, who also commanded the operating units, further said Iran's Alvand destroyer, Larak medical ship, a fix-wing navy aircraft, an AB chopper, and a BH7 hovercraft joined Oman's Nasr Al-Bahr warship and chopper in the drills.

The commander said the drills were aimed at "coordinating relief and rescue operations among Iranian and Omani naval forces".
