“Zarif will leave Tehran for Ashgabat on Monday at the head of a high-ranking politico-economic delegation,” Iranian Ambassador to Turkmenistan Mohammad Mousa Hashemi Golpayegani told FNA.
The Iranian ambassador underlined that the Iranian foreign minister will also meet Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredow.
The 12th session of the Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Economic Commission was held in Tehran in July 2012 during which the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding to increase trade volume and economic relations.
Iran and Turkmenistan have had official diplomatic relations since Turkmenistan's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Iran was the first country to recognize Turkmenistan as an independent nation.
Since then, the two countries have enjoyed good relations and have cooperated in the economic and energy sectors.
