Foreign Ministry on Thursday issued a statement to mark anniversary of downing Iranian passenger plane by the US warship terming the tragedy of 1988 manifest crime against humanity.

The Foreign Ministry said on anniversary of US warship attack against Iran's passenger plane that the US warship commander perpetrated crime against humanity bringing shame on the United States in 1988.

The crime will never be forgotten from memory of the mankind, it said.

The US Vincennes warship commander perpetrated the crime firing two missiles toward Iran's Airbus plane on July 3, 1988 which killed 290 people on board including 66 children less than 12 years old.

The Ministry expressed sympathy with families of the victims and called the incident as a clear violation of international law and the peremptory norms.
