Superstar soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his gratitude to the Iranians for their “incredibly warm welcome” during his stay in Iran for an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) match.

Ronaldo expressed his gratitude to the Iranian fans through an Instagram post on Tuesday after the AFC match between Iran’s Persepolis and Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium which ended in 2-0 victory for the Saudi team. The match marked Ronaldo’s first game in the AFC Champions League.

Ronaldo’s visit to Iran was met with much enthusiasm from local fans. Thousands turned up to welcome the footballer ahead of the AFC Champions League match. His fans had also gathered at Imam Khomeini International Airport in southwestern Tehran when Al Nassr arrived in the city on Monday.

The warm reception continued at Espinas Palace Hotel in northwestern Tehran, where Ronaldo and his teammates were staying. Supporters went up in a resonant chant of “Ronaldo, Ronaldo” in the lobby and hallways of the hotel.

A young fan had the privilege of meeting him and even performing his iconic ‘Siu’ celebration in front of Ronaldo. The star reciprocated by giving the boy an autograph and an Al-Nassr jersey. Also, a disabled Iranian girl who had painted pictures of Ronaldo was warmly welcomed by the iconic footballer when she came to his hotel.
