Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Western countries must be held accountable for supplying and equipping former Iraqi ruler, Saddam Hussein, with chemical weapons that were used against civilians, both in Iran and Iraq.

Araghchi addressed the issue in an interview with the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on the sidelines of the 30th annual Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in The Hague on Tuesday.

He stated that the Islamic Republic continues to pursue justice for the victims of chemical weapons, noting: “Some Western countries claim to be investigating the involvement of their companies and individuals in supplying chemical materials to the Saddam regime, but we have not yet been informed of the results.”

The top diplomat emphasized that Tehran has placed the matter on the agenda to ensure accountability and secure compensation for the victims.

More than 100 people were killed, and thousands of others were exposed to chemical agents when Iraqi bombers attacked four densely populated areas of Sardasht, a small city in Iran’s West Azerbaijan province, on June 28, 1987.

Iran has repeatedly accused Western countries of providing Saddam Hussein with chemical weapons during the war and then remaining silent in the face of the resulting tragedies.
