Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday that Iran and Turkiye share common concerns and interests, stressing that despite differences on some issues, the two neighbors have consistently maintained close consultations.

In an exclusive interview with IRNA following his Sunday meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Araghchi said the meeting with his Turkish counterpart was held within the framework of the two countries’ ongoing consultations. Various bilateral topics were discussed, including trade volume, political exchanges, cultural, commercial, and economic matters, he added.

He noted that, despite some differences on certain issues, Iran and Turkiye share common concerns and interests due to their geographical proximity, emphasizing that close dialogue and diplomatic exchanges between the two countries have persisted, even during times of disagreement.

The top Iranian diplomat further highlighted the mutual understanding between Iran and Turkiye that their relations should remain friendly under all circumstances, regardless of existing differences.

Iran, Turkiye FMs discuss regional crises

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed various regional crises, Araghchi said, adding that the issue of Gaza and Palestine was at the top of the agenda. Both parties condemned the expansionist policies and aggressions of the Zionist regime against countries in the region, he added.

The situation in Lebanon was also discussed, including frequent violations of the ceasefire and escalating threats by Israel, the top Iranian diplomat said.

Regarding Syria, emphasis was placed on preserving the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as a factor for regional stability, although the two sides disagree on some details, Araghchi noted.

Additionally, they addressed the establishment of a joint regional security structure, he said, highlighting their belief that, given the recent acts of aggression by the Zionist regime and its clear policy direction, there is an urgent need for regional countries to collaborate closely to form a common security framework.

Iran, Turkiye FMs discuss nuclear issues, international topics

Regarding the nuclear issue, Iran has expressed its readiness for “honorable and fair negotiations” from “a position of equality,” he said, adding that it is the United States, with its “greedy and bullying policies”, that has currently hindered the possibility for negotiations.

He said, “As soon as we conclude that negotiations with any party are in the interest of the Iranian people and secure their rights, we will undoubtedly not hesitate. However, at the same time, we will not yield to bullying and greed.”

The sides also discussed other international issues, including Ukraine and Europe, he said
