The Director General for SCO and BRICS Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mehrdad Kiaei, says that the joint Sahand-2025 anti-terrorism exercise clearly demonstrates the shared commitment of like-minded countries to combat the threat of terrorism effectively.

The Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Piao Yangfan, who travelled to Tehran to witness the drill in person, met and held talks with Kiaei on Wednesday to discuss several topics, including the holding of the joint Sahand-2025 anti-terrorism exercise in Iran.

In their meeting, Kiaei outlined the Islamic Republic of Iran’s positions regarding security threats and challenges, describing the positive reactions from member and regional countries towards the joint 2025 Sahand counter-terrorism exercise as a clear indication of the united commitment among like-minded countries to effectively confront the threat of terrorism.

He emphasized the importance of enhancing coordination and cooperation among SCO member states and other regional partners to address security threats that could undermine the peace and stability of member countries and the region.

For her part, Yangfan appreciated the active participation and valuable initiatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the organization’s meetings, as well as its hosting of various events for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Highlighting the importance of Iran’s position, role, and experiences in countering terrorism, she assessed the SCO anti-terror drill ‘Sahand-2025’ held by the Iranian armed forces as a suitable platform for exchanging experiences among member states in the field of counter-terrorism.

The final phase of the Sahand 2025 drill, hosted by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Ground Forces in cooperation with the Foreign Ministry, commenced on December 1 and will last for five days at the military operations area (MOA) in Shabestar County in East Azarbaijan province, with 18  delegations from SCO member states and regional military and security organizations.
